About The Tour

The Zanskar Cycle tour is a 552 Kms – 10 day expedition that will transport you through the awe-inspiring landscapes, diverse topography, and rich cultural tapestry of the Zanskar region. This tour will take you from Srinagar, over the Zojila Pass and into the Drass valley along the Kargil and onward over the Rangdum to reach the mythical Kingdom of Zanskar. Read Less

The route is a mix of tarmac and rough un-metalled roads with beautiful views throughout. Biking through some of the remotest parts of Kashmir and Ladakh, this trip provides a myriad of experiences. Zanskar is a valley from another time. The remoteness of the region allows few modern amenities . Ancient monasteries dot the brown valleys, interspersed with green villages – it’s the High Himalayas at their best. We end the trip in well connected Kargil town from where you can choose to either make your way to Srinagar or Leh. Itinerary

Day wise itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival Srinagar

A cordial greeting awaits you from our representative upon your arrival, whether it be at the airport or the TRC. Take the time to acclimate on your arrival day.

You’ll be accommodated in the comfort of Pintail Houseboat, situated on the picturesque banks of the Dal Lake.

Day 2 : Explore Mughal Gardens (30kms)

Following breakfast, embark on a journey to discover the Mughal Gardens, including Nishat Garden, Shalimar Garden, Chashma Shahi, and Pari Mahal in the evening. Your accommodation will be in a houseboat/hotel situated along the banks of the Jhelum River.

Day 3 : Srinagar to Sonmarg (89.4kms)

A sumptuous breakfast will be served in the beautiful Srinagar morning. An assistant will be examining your cycles for your Trip and will guide thereof. The trip will start with the flag off ceremony towards Sonamarg from the heart of valley ‘Srinagar’. this will be a 30 Kms ride while crossing the magnificent and appealing views of Dal Lake from its banks on Boulevard and Foreshore Road to Ganderbal main. Sindh River in Wayil Ganderbal with its magnificent views will boost your energy till you reach to a very prominent Rafting point at Wussan Ganderbal. After crossing the Shuitker crossing point you will finally reach your destination with the green glossy plains surrounded by the snowy Himalayan mountaintops. A Night stay at Hotel on the Shore of Sindh River In the heart of Sonamarg.

Day 4 : Sonmarg to Drass (69kms)

After a scrumptious breakfast, you will start biking expedition! Start riding uphill and Downhill towards Zojila (Rated Highest among 10 toughest roads in India) after crossing the famous Zojila pass you will ride along the curved road. You will pass through a few quaint villages of Mini Marag and lush forest plains.

During this 69kms Ride, you will be experiencing the prominent culture and tradition of the villages like: Zero Point, Minimarag, Drass. During the Ride, you will have Two Feeding Points in this stage.

Day 5 : Drass to Kargil (63.1kms)

After breakfast, you will ride towards to Kargil. During this ride, you will come across downhill and uphill as well as the flat road. Meanwhile you will explore the beauty of Kargil and the gardens of apricot. There are two feeding stations on the way. All mobile networks will be available. Night Stay at Hotel

Day 6 : Kargil to Panikhar (60kms)

Following breakfast, embark on a journey towards Panikhar, encountering a mix of uphill and downhill stretches, along with stretches of flat roads. En route, take in the scenic beauty of Damsa, with the opportunity to pause at two feeding stations for refreshments. Throughout the ride, stay connected as all mobile networks will be accessible. The day concludes with a night stay at a comfortable Guest House.

Day 7 : Rangdum to Paddum Zanskar (106kms)

Following breakfast, our mechanic will conduct a morning inspection of your bicycles. Subsequently, you will commence your journey towards Padam Zanskar. This day promises both beauty and challenge, as the ride spans approximately 106 kilometers, allowing you to explore captivating valleys along the way.The day concludes with a night stay at a comfortable Guest House.

Day 8 : Ganbo Rangjon Mountain (70kms)

This riding day promises to be truly extraordinary as we’ll have the opportunity to witness the breathtaking Gonbo Rangjon, renowned as one of the most stunning mountains globally. For adventure enthusiasts, encountering this majestic peak is a dream come true.

Gonbo Rangjon: It is considered to be holy and referred to as God’s Mountain by the local inhabitants who practice Tibetan Buddhism.

Will there be luggage transfer or van support on this tour?

Our support vehicle will transport luggage from one hotel to the next each day. For tired cyclists, vehicle support is available on most days, along with our cycling guide. Please refer to the specific itinerary for details.

What are my bicycle options for the tour?

Bicycle rental is available guided bike tours. We offer premium TREK Marlin 6 (1×10 gears with hydraulic brakes and SCOTT Aspect 960 (2×9 Gears with hydraulic brakes) bikes. Please see the specific tour webpage for bike types available on each tour. All frame sizes available.

Who will be our guide and mechanic?

Our guides are one of our biggest assets and we pride ourselves on their level of quality and high standards. Once the trip reaches 8 people, we provide you with two of our expert guides to maximize your enjoyment and overall experience. You’ll know you’re in safe hands as all of our guides are certified in first aid and CPR and many of them are trained bike mechanics. They come from all walks of life but our guides have a common desire to give you the best possible experience, fun and lots of fond memories to take home with you.All frame sizes available.

What is the difficulty level of this tour?

Most tours cover no more than 65 km (40 miles) per day and range from low-intermediate to advanced difficulty levels. If you have any questions, feel free to email us. To fully enjoy your tour, it’s important to ride your bike at least weekly and be comfortable spending time in the saddle!

I am very fit, will this tour be challenging enough for me?

Our standard routes on each tour are designed for the average recreational cyclist. That said, almost every tour allows for added distance for those with extra energy. On many tour routes, we’ll suggest optional longer rides.

What are the road conditions and traffic like? And the type of terrain?

For our tours in the Kashmir and Ladakh regions listed on our website, we design routes that not only showcase scenic and must-see spots but also prioritize safety. We carefully select the best cycling options, avoiding roads with significant vehicle traffic and opting for quiet backroads instead. In some itineraries, you may need to cross busy intersections or share the road with traffic for short stretches. When this occurs, we always look for bike lanes or the safest routes.

Most of our routes use paved roads and bike lanes. We stay informed about road conditions and adapt our routes if we become aware of any deterioration or construction. Some itineraries may include bike paths or backroads with stretches of hard-packed dirt or gravel (non-technical). Please check the tour webpage for details. We also offer custom itineraries and tour packages throughout Kashmir. The road conditions and terrain will vary based on your custom tour request, so please refer to your specific itinerary for details.

What should I pack?

We will send you hand bike tour packing list when your booking is completed. To help get you started, we recommend you plan on bringing the following:

A few pairs of bicycling shorts and jerseys
A few non-bicycling outfits to wear for your time off the bike
Helmet (we recommend attaching it to the outside of your carry on if it does not fit in your luggage)
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Toiletries
Spare glasses, contact lenses
Dress pants/ skirts and shirts (layering is always encouraged)
Two pairs of shoes (a pair for cycling and a pair to wear around town after cycling)
Any prescription medication you might need and prescriptions in case you need to refill.
A battery bank / power bank to keep your smartphone going all day

What meals are included on tour and what are they like?

All breakfasts are included on our typical bike tour. Breakfast is normally served according the meal plan of hotels. Some hotels provide cold cuts and/or eggs in addition to the continental breakfast. If you have any dietary needs or food allergies, please ask and we’ll be glad to help! On some of our tour packages, dinners or additional meals may be included – please check the specific itinerary for details. We often include meal suggestions for lunch, dinner or stops along the way.

What about lunches and dinner’s? Do you have vegan/vegetarian?

Many of our customers purchase picnic supplies for lunch along the way. If you prefer to stop at a café or restaurant, there will be plenty on your route (listed in your road book on self-guided tours, or suggested by the tour leader on guided tours). For dinner we’ll suggest local restaurants, typically within walking distance (dinners are included in some of our tour packages – check the itinerary). If you are vegan, vegetarian or you need a gluten-free meal, please ask and we’ll be happy to help.

What are accommodation on tour like?

Getting a good night’s sleep is essential, so we select comfortable, well-managed, and ideally centrally-located accommodations. All rooms come with a private bathroom. We also prioritize charm and personality, seeking out hotel staff and hosts who go out of their way to make your stay delightful.

The type of accommodation varies slightly by tour, destination, and tour type (Classic vs. Casual tours). Please check your specific itinerary or email us for more details on lodging.

Generally, we use comfortable 3-star hotels and guest house/ camps . Some itineraries may include higher-end 2-star or 4-star hotels. We also offer room upgrade options in many tour packages. Please refer to the tour webpage for specific details.

If i come alone, will i have anyone to cycle with?

Yes! This is a group tour, so welcome on board! Depending on the itinerary, there will be days where the group can spread out, giving some participants the chance to cycle on their own or in smaller groups. But generally, the group will ride together, along with our tour leader.

if i am a solo traveler can you find you find me a roommate?

Please let us know, and we’ll make an effort to find you a roommate if you are alone. If we can’t find you a roommate you’ll have to pay the single supplement.

Who is responsible for the bikes if they are damaged or stolen?

You are responsible for bike damage or theft, and you’ll agree to this when you sign our contract at delivery. So please be careful!
